AN EXTREMELY RARE
ORIGINAL EXAMPLE OF
DER GIFTPILZ
(THE POISON MUSHROOM)
ONE OF THE
MOST ANTI-JEWISH
BOOKS EVER PUBLISHED!
Der Giftpilz (The Poison Mushroom) was published in 1938 by Julius Streicher's Stürmer Verlag of Nürnberg, Germany in follow-up to an earlier success Trau keinem Fuchs auf grüner Heid und keinem Jud auf seinem Eid (Don't Trust a Fox in a Green Pasture Or a Jew Upon His Oath) in 1936. Like the “Fox” book, “The Poison Mushroom” was written by Stürmer Hauptschriftleiter Ernst Hiemer and illustrated with 18 colorful paintings by Philipp “Fips” Rupprecht.
Der Giftpilz is the story that begins with a German mother explaining to her child how mushrooms are somewhat like people - some are good and some are poison. The book then expands on the comparison by equating Jews to poison mushrooms. In great detail and in extremely graphic pictures the book attempts to explain how no real German could ever tolerate Jews in Germany. The heavily illustrated hard cover book is cloth bound and measures 8-1/4 x 10-5/8 inches and contains 64 unnumbered pages on heavy art paper. In addition to a virulently anti-Jewish text written in simple German, there are many short poems mocking Jews and their physical characteristics.
In addition to being a book publisher, Stürmer Verlag was a newspaper publisher, publishing both the enormously anti-Jewish daily Der Stürmer and the Fränkischer Tageszeitung. Because of the anti-Semitic nature of everything published by Stürmer Verlag during the Third Reich of Adolf Hitler, most of it was destroyed when the Allies purged Germany of Nazi literature after World War II. Today, original examples of Der Giftpilz sell at auction for prices around $3000.00 per copy.

This book is from the edition of 51 to 70 thousand printed and is in very good used condition. It was used in a school and on three pages (inside blank front fly leaf, in the margins on page 27 and page 31) there are property stamps of the 2. Volksschule. None of the stamps are on Fips illustrations or over the top of type. The pictures are bright and in excellent condition almost exactly as when they were printed 75 years ago. There is an occasional finger print here or there in the page margins which we have not attempted to erase or remove.
The top and bottom edges of the cover show wear and the spine cloth was apparently replaced at some point but matches very nicely.
