This 1942 German book Englisch für Mittelschulen is a book well-designed to teach Middle School students English in Nazi Germany during World War II. Published in 1942, the publisher states in the foreword that despite the war, English sources such as British newspapers and magazines were located and used for the content of this book.
The publisher claims that actual letters and newspaper ads are used in the book, proof of residents of London fleeing to safety in the country side. There are pictures of sandbags protecting important buildings in London and children with gas masks around their necks waiting to be evacuated.
The section called Übungen (Exersises) contains examples of definite and indefinite articles, adverbs, possessive, singular and plural examples, as well as sections to be translated. There are "scenes" (taking the train, at the booking office, timetables, asking for directions) and different sentence structures in the English and German languages are pointed out. Teaching this subject was clearly a priority of German planners that soon expected to be sending English fluent Germans to occupy Britain.
The 5-¾ x 8-¼ inch, 108-page hardcover school book has chapters about the air war, war on the British home front, how to become a pilot, and the two “Incidents from the Present War” chapters are about the fate of a British scouting plane over the German coast and the crew of a British tanker hit by a torpedo from a Nazi U-Boot sinking the ship “British Influence”. Other lessons cover the Battle of Hastings and William the Conqueror, Francis Drake, and Mary Queen of Scots.
There is a Wörterverzeichnis or vocabulary section using words contained in the different chapters of this 80+ year old World war II German school book. The Appendix has sheet music for four songs, including Auld Lang Syne, and inside the back cover is an 8-1/2 x 12-7/8 inch fold-out map of Great Britain.
This Second Edition of Englisch für Mittelschulen with 19 pictures was published and printed by Verlag B.G. Teubner of Leipzig and Berlin in 1942. It has the name of the original user inside the front cover and on some pages she used a light lead pencil to add some very brief notes that could easily be erased.
Like most Third Reich school books for sale nowadays, this one was used as is obvious in our picture at the top of this USMBOOKS web page. However, it is in good used condition, complete with the frequently missing fold-out map and it has no odor.
This 1942 Nazi school book Englisch für Mittelschulen is for sale for $85.00 delivered by Media Mail in the continental USA.
