According to the foreword by Dr. Matthias Schmitz of the German Library of Information, A Nation Builds, was produced to give the American public a glimpse of the contemporary German architectural renaissance in Hitler's Germany. Photos used in this 9-¼ x 10-¼ inch, 134 page softcover book were selected from those published in Nazi books and magazines on architecture and design published between 1935 and 1939; München baut auf, Architektur und Bauplastik der Gegenwart, Die deutsche Alpenstrasse, die neue Reichskanzlei, Das Bauen im neuen Reich, Die Kunst im Deutschen Reich, Bauten der Bewegung, just to name a few.
A Nation Builds - Contemporary German Architecture was published by the German Library of Information in New York City in November 1940. During the Third Reich, the German Library of Information in New York published a lot of English language material about Nazi Germany, familiarizing the American public with the Third Reich, its leaders, its politics, culture, art, customs and history. On 11 December 1941, the US Congress declared war on Germany just hours after Germany declared war on the US in the aftermath of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Very quickly, the American Consulate and the German Library of Information in New York were closed for the duration of the war.
If you are an English reader interested in Third Reich art, architecture and design, this is the photo book for you! It contains photos of the Führerbau and Nazi Honor Temples on the Königsplatz in Munich, Hitler's New Reichschancellery designed by Professor Albert Speer, Hermann Goering's Air Ministry designed by Ernst Sagebiel, the Deutschlandhalle and new Administration Building of the DAF in Berlin, the State Theater in Saarbrücken (photo left), the Dietrich Eckart open-air theater and other facilities on or near the Reichssportfeld in Berlin, the Olympic Stadium, 'then & now' photos of the Schiller Theater in Berlin, the huge new buildings on the Nazi Party Day Grounds in Nürnberg, Ordensburg Sonthofen ("where future leaders are trained"), exterior and interior photos of Luftwaffe and other military barracks, the House of German Education in Bayreuth, several different Hitler Youth hostels, as well as exterior and interior photos of modern private homes and low cost homes in Nazi Siedlungen.
There are several pages of photos of modern churches built since the National Socialists were elected to power, recreation facilities for average German citizens and modern industrial buildings. A Nation Builds also has a section on the revolutionary Reichsautobahn, its bridges and remarkable rest stops and service stations. This section includes photos of the "Reichsautobahn Inn" on the Chiemsee between Munich and Salzburg, showing travelers eating on the terrace and in its dining room.
A Nation Builds also has photos of Nazi models of large architecture projects planned in Berlin, Nuremberg and Munich and even the projected German Embassy in Washington DC! The book ends with a quote by Adolf Hitler, "It is a wonderful thing to participate in a work which serves the interest of no individual but belongs to all and will render service for centuries."
Printed in the USA, this original 83 year old example of A Nation Builds - Contemporary German Architecture is in very good, little-used condition. Some discoloration to the cover, but the interior pages are in very nice condition and the book has no odor. Inside the front cover is a bookplate of a previous owner.
