This 5 x 8 inch, 24 page bound booklet once held the series of tickets and/or their stubs related to the 8 - 18 February 1939 Rund-um-Italienfahrt 'Der Deutsche' or the "Cruise Around Italy" of the KdF ship "Der Deutsche".
The booklet serial number 583 was sold to Hermine Wieland of Kiel for just under 50 Reichsmarks (about $10.00). The tour visited Genoa, Naples, Pompeii, Palermo, the Greek island of Corfu and Venice. She traveled in cabin number 132, in Bed A.

The booklet includes a fold-out map and timetable of the KdF cruise from Genoa around the bottom of Italy and back up through the Adriatic to Venice, and a two-sided instruction sheet on how to use the tickets, ending with the words, Heil Hitler!

The tickets themselves are both bound and stapled into the book and allowed for various activities both onboard the ship and ashore. The activities includes things like guided city tours, meals, seats at various events, etc. There were baggage labels, maps of the cities visited along with historical and tourist information, etc.

The booklet included little Italian and Nazi flags that the passenger could use to identify their nationality; the Italian flags (see above right) remain in this book, the Nazi flags were torn out along the perforations.

Mrs. Wieland went on most excursions. Ticket stubs were torn off for the tour of Ischia (11 February), Pompei and Napels (12 February), Palermo (13 February), Venice (17 February) but she did not take the city tour of Genoa on 9 February. The Innsbruck meal ticket also was not used.

The train tickets from Hamburg to Genoa and Venezia to Hamburg are still in this KdF cruise ticket book, as is the discount ticket for Hermine Wieland's train trip from Kiel to Hamburg and back (shown directly above).

A very rare piece of KdF travel ephemera that provides a perfect inside look into the cost and pleasures of a KdF steamship cruise 79 years ago. Complete with fold-out map and even the rare, frequently missing, paper cover for this original KdF Gutscheinheft or coupon booklet, is still there (shown left).
