This splendid 8-1/4 x 9-1/2 inch, 64 page, very heavily illustrated softcover book is a comprehensive examination of the history and function of the Flakartillerie (Anti-Aircraft Artillery) Service of the German Wehrmacht.

The name of the book Rote Spiegel does not really mean “Red Mirror” as some would translate it. In the Wehrmacht collar tabs were colloquially called Spiegel and in this case Rote Spiegel refers to the bright red collar tabs of the Flak (Fliegerabwehrkanon) regiments of the Hermann Göring Division, the “Cannoneers of the Reichsmarschall”.

This book was published by Albert Limbach Verlag in Berlin in 1943. It starts with a statement of just why “Flak” is so important militarily and why English aviators say “a flight to Berlin is a flight in hell!” That section is followed by pictures of German Flak weapons from 1870 to the present (1943).

Dozens and dozens of pictures show the Flak weapon inventory of the Wehrmacht, explain the training and opportunities available to Flak troops, and describe harrowing tales of combat in the Flak service. In the back there are 1-3/4 x 2-1/4 inch photographs and biographies of the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross winners of the Flakartillerie from General Weise to Afrikakorps Wachtmeister Reinhard Melzer and about 75 others. Very good condition.
