This is an original English language book American Enterprise in Europe: The Rôle of the SOS in the Defeat of Germany as printed in France in 1945 under the direction of Chief Information and Education Division USFET.
Randolph Leigh (Lt. Col. C.M.P. Historical Section Etousa) wrote the foreword in June 1945 in Paris. The foreword starts: This book is not intended as a definitive history of this phase of the American effort in Europe, but simply as a souvenir to recall for the soldier the highlights of the great project in which he had a part. Obviously one person could not gather and evaluate all the material for a book on the Services of Supply of the U. S. Army in the ETO.
Actually more than 100 persons, ranging from a Pfc to the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces, contributed variously. Ten generals, for instance, read proof and criticized chapters dealing with their particular branches. The material as a whole, however, was gathered through the Historical Section, ETOUSA, and by the historians of the staff sections.
This 4-5/8 x 7-1/2 inch, 238-page book has interesting chapters on the supplies needed to support US Army troops on the front line after the D-Day invasion in Normandy in June 1945. It contains fascinating, detailed comparisons between World War I and World War II on ‘non-operating personnel’, engineers, military vehicles, gasoline, weapons and ammunition, casualties, venereal disease, the cost of the war effort and more.
This First Edition of American Enterprise in Europe: The Rôle of the SOS in the Defeat of Germany was published by USFET and printed in Paris in August 1945. The 76 year old softcover book is complete and in very nice used condition. No odor.
The text is supplemented with many full-page photos and wonderful line drawings that can not be found in any other World War II publication.
