This is a fine original First Edition hardcover example of the Almanach der deutschen Beamten 1935, the heavily illustrated handbook for German Civil Servants published by the Reichsbund der deutschen Beamten in Berlin.
While the subject of civil servants is not particularly ‘exciting’, this in-depth book is a very good example of the organizational structure and genius of the National Socialists in the mid 1930s. It is a beautifully produced hardcover book with a cloth spine and all the photos are printed on glossy photo paper.
Almanach der deutschen Beamten starts with black & white frontispiece portraits of Adolf Hitler and Reichsminister Dr. Wilhelm Frick above their facsimile signatures. After a foreword by Interior Minister Dr. Frick, the martyrs of the Nazi Movement are commemorated. The names of National Socialists killed from 1923-1933 are listed inside a wreath outline. A 1935 calendar follows on the next 25 pages. It lists important historical dates in German and Nazi history, as well as events of and for the Reichsbund der deutschen Beamten.
There are several pages of wonderful photo collages of RDB events, outings (to Berlin, the Nazi Party Days in Nürnberg, camping), speeches, the Adolf-Wagner-Beamtenlager outside Munich, and RDB officials with Adolf Hitler, Rudolf Hess, Dr. Joseph Goebbels, Hermann Göring, etc., etc.
This 7 x 9-5/8 inch, 208-page Almanach der deutschen Beamten still has the - frequently missing - large tipped-in 18-¼ x 22-¼ inch fold-out in the back of the book, showing a map of Nazi Germany with the Gau organization of the RDB. It is in great shape and looks like it was unfolded only one or two times!
A painting by Professor Carl Horn (who was married to the mother of Rudolf Heß’s wife Ilse) was used on the front cover of this 87 year old Nazi book. It shows Reichskanzler Adolf Hitler, Staatssekretär Hans Lammers, Pg. Hermann Neef and other RDB officials during the consecration of the flag of RDB Fachschaftsgruppe "Reichskanzlei" on 27 October 1933.
A fine book in very good condition with a tight spine and no offensive odor. There is way more than meets the eye in this heavily illustrated, fascinating Third Reich book!
One of the founders of the RDB,
Gauleiter and
Reichstatthalter Jakob Sprenger (shown above) wrote an extensive chapter about the development of the National Socialist Civil Servant ‘Movement’ and
Reichsbeamtenführer Pg. Hermann Neef, explained the development of the RDB under National Socialism. Other chapters explain the organizational structure and goals of the RDB, the leadership of the RDB, educational purposes, benefits for members of the Nazi Association of German Civil Servants (insurance, healthcare, etc.) and the importance of civil servants to the success of the Nazi labor movement and destiny of Nazi Germany.
There is also a very interesting chapter about the
NS-Beamtenpresse, the press and publishing department of the Nazi Association of German Civil Servants located on Wilhelmstrasse 146 in Berlin (Hitler’s Reichschancellery was located on Wilhelmstrasse 77). It explains its mission and goals and contains a list of the many different books, magazines and newspapers (including the size of each print run) published for members of the RDB and for educational purposes!
There are full-page photos of Hermann Göring, Generaloberst Werner von Blomberg, Konstantin Freiherr von Neurath, Rudolf Heß, Pg. Hermann Neef, Gauleiter Jakob Sprenger and Pg. Josef Reusch, as well as 13 glossy pages of ID photo size pictures accompanying short biographies of RDB leaders from different Gaue in Nazi Germany (complete with the address of their office).
