1939 HARDCOVER NAZI PHOTO BOOK ON THE HOUSING OF RAD MEN IN TIROL

This is a very fine example of the 1939 hardcover Nazi photo book Holzhaus im Landschaftsraum - Reichsarbeitsdienst in Tirol (Wooden Houses in the Natural Landscape - Nazi Labor Service in Tirol) by Oberarbeitsführer Wilhelm Schlaghecke. Schlaghecke also provided his color and black & white Leica camera photos for the book. The illustrations and technical data were supplied by Heinrich Geissler.

The remaining thick paper pages explain technical details involved in the preparation and building of the wooden RAD homes.

“Wooden House in the Natural Landscape” has a foreword by Reichsarbeitsführer Konstantin Hierl. In it he explains that housing for men of the Reichsarbeitsdienst or State Labor Service was intended to blend in with the broader natural landscape, be in harmony with nature. The buildings were supposed to help the men open their eyes to nature and local culture, while they also performed important work for the Nation.

The first 16 pages of the book provide information on the choice of the site for RAD housing in Tirol. That required taking into consideration accessibility, soil, costs, availability of local builders, the possibility of blending in with the landscape, disturbing nature as little as possible, among other things.

The 9 x 10-7/8 inch, heavily illustrated 88-page hardcover book was published by Nationalsozialistische Gauverlag Tirol in Innsbruck in 1939. It has a red linen spine and is in very nice little-used condition. It comes with its original 85+ year old dust jacket which is scotch taped along the top and bottom edges, thus preserving it.


This original 1939 example of Holzhaus im Landschaftsraum - Reichsarbeitsdienst in Tirol was once part of the library of Reichsarbeitsdienst Arb. Dienstgruppe 990. Their round Nazi eagle and swastika stamp is on the back of the title page. The splendid book has a tight spine and no odor.

These high-quality thick paper pages are followed by 58 photo pages showing RAD barracks in various locations in spring, summer and winter, rural scenery, farm animals, RAD men of various ranks, RAD men at work, exterior and interior architectural details, interior decor, religious statues and monuments, etc.
