1931 MITROPA ZEITUNG GERMAN RAILROAD MAGAZINE FOR TRAIN TRAVELERS

MITROPA is short for MITteleu ROPäische Schlafwagen- und Speisewagen-Aktien-Gesellschaft (Central European Sleeping and Dining Cars Incorporated), and it is the name of the German company that was responsible for the sleeping accommodations as well as the food service on Deutsche Reichsbahn trains in the 20th century.

The company also operated restaurants in railway stations in many large German cities. It still exists today!

During World War II a limited selection of food was available on German trains for purchase with food stamps until 1942. During the last years of the war Mitropa trains were used for military transportation. The company also ran a restaurant in the main railway station of Warsaw in German occupied Poland!

For sale on this USMBOOKS web page is a rare example of their 8-¼ x 11-¾ inch magazine called MITROPA ZEITUNG. It is a Berlin edition for the week of 13 - 19 July 1931 and train passengers were invited to take the magazine with them (Bitte mitnehmen!).

The 28 heavily illustrated pages have German language articles about special events going on in the German capital of Berlin in the middle of July 1931, theater news, suggestions for things to do and see, Tempelhof Airport, museums, pictures of Berlin monuments, and the double-page center spread is a map of central Berlin.

There is advertising for hundreds of hotels and pensions in Berlin and elsewhere in Germany, restaurants, beer halls, night clubs, Lufthansa Airlines, UfA films, Bahlzen cookies, Bols liqueur, the Deutsche Bau (construction) exhibition, Stollwerck chocolates, Underberg, Kaffee Hag, even travel sickness medicine.

Our photos show the actual rare 93+ year old MITROPA magazine for German train travelers we offer for sale. It is complete and in very nice, little-used condition without any writing or odor.
