Der Arbeitskamerad, Jahrbuch der Werktätigen Jugend 1941/1942 (The Teammate, Yearbook of the Working Youth 1941 / 1942) is an unusual Third Reich book with text assembled by Erich Strecke and Leopold Ost.
On the front flyleaf is a 4 x 6-¼ inch bookplate showing this example of der Arbeitskamerad, Jahrbuch der Werktätigen Jugend 1941/1942 was given to Martin Lutz at Christmas time 1942 by the German aircraft manufacturer Dornier-Werke in Munich where he apparently was a student or apprentice.
In the introduction the publishers mention that this book was assembled to help young people decide what kind of career to chose after finishing high school. It says that many know what they want to do and are familiar with their father’s career or their neighbor’s profession, but that actual details of many jobs are not well-known to young people.
Another purpose of the book is to prepare educators and business leaders for the responsibility of dealing with young German boys and girls, pupils and apprentices, and helping them with their Berufswahl or the selection of a future job or career. This was considered an important responsibility for parents as well.
The chapters in this book are written by people employed in different industries, artisans and farmers, all with the purpose of showing what skills their specific field would entail.
Published by Carl Röhrig-Verlag of München in 1941, this 7 x 9-¾ inch, 310-page hardcover Third Reich book comes with its original dust jacket which was laminated by a previous owner to protect it. The book is complete and in nice used condition and has no odor.
The first chapter is by a member of the Organisation-Todt working at the front. It is accompanied by a full-page photo portrait of Reichsorganisationsleiter Dr. Robert Ley, the Leader of the Deutsche Arbeitsfront. Another chapter about Reichsjugendführer Artur Axmann has his full-page photo portrait.
Other chapters are written by a chemist, a railroad worker, an administrator, a carpenter, a shipyard worker, a Reichsautobahn laborer, a Westwall builder, and all are accompanied by fine illustrations by Walter Vits of Düsseldorf.
In the back is a long and very interesting list of jobs available in different industries including electrician, silversmith, watchmaker, carpenter, optician, piano builder, roofer, hat maker, baker, locksmith, rifle engraver, gemstone polisher, concrete worker, airplane engine mechanic, printer, basket weaver, butcher, glass blower, fish smoker, hair stylist, salesman, sailor, book binder, cook, waiter, tailor, distiller, travel agent, florist, etc., etc.
