Das Ehrenkleid des Soldaten (Honor Clothing of the Soldier) is a cultural history of military uniforms from their beginnings to present times (1936). It was written by German historian and author Martin Lezius (who also wrote using the pen name Triarius), and has a foreword by German Generalfeldmarschall von Mackensen.
The 8-1/2 x 11-1/4 inch, 1-3/4 inch thick book weighs 4-½ pounds and contains 420 pages with 208 color illustrations. There are pen and ink illustrations in the text portion and superb watercolors by famous painter and illustrator Erich Döbrich of Berlin-Steglitz (well-known for his Third Reich military postcards).
Covered are German uniforms, from the Middle Ages to the Thirty Year War, wars against Sweden and Turkey, Prussian uniforms through the 1700s, the era of the "Soldier King” Friedrich Wilhelm I, Napoleonic Wars to World War I and Der Übergang zur feldgrauen Uniform (the Transition to the Field Gray Uniform) of the Third Reich.
Also pictured but with less emphasis are historic military uniforms from Austria, the United States, Italy, England, Russia, France, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Belgium and Spain. Das Ehrenkleid des Soldaten also includes a section of peace time uniforms of all regiments of the German Army describing their specific features.
Verlag Ullstein of Berlin published Das Ehrenkleid des Soldaten in 1936 and this First Edition has fine dark blue hardcovers with gold blocking. It comes with an insert providing corrections for captions on page 380, 381, 382 and 383 and the fly leaf has a handwritten 1936 Christmas dedication.
This 4-½ pound beautifully color illustrated 86 year old book is in very nice condition with a tight spine and no odor.
